Is a Taller Greenhouse Always Better?

With more than 20 years of experience in the greenhouse industry, Prasada has seen many clients opt for higher greenhouses. Does greater height always mean better performance?

Usually, we feature a greenhouse gutter height of 4–5m and a ridge height of 6.5–7.5m. When equipped with high-tech climate control systems (semi-closed system), the gutter height can reach 6m or even higher. This configuration provides a good balance between ventilation performance, growing conditions, and investment cost.

With a higher structure, the greenhouse usually benefits from:

    Better natural ventilation

More indoor stable temperature and humidity

    Improved crop thermal environment

More inner and higher space for crop growth and grower operation

However, taller greenhouses come with trade-offs:

Higher costs: More steel, covering materials, and reinforced foundations push up total investment.

Greater load requirements: The structure must withstand heavier dead load, wind load, and crop load, especially in typhoon and windy regions.

Rising energy use for heating and cooling systems.

Thus, proper greenhouse height is critical for ideal growing conditions. It needs to match:

Local climate and wind resistance standards

     Crop varieties

     System requirements

Project budget and return on investment
