6 Practical Cooling Tactics for Film Greenhouses in European Extreme Heat

Europe’s July heat dome has triggered widespread temperatures over 40°C, bringing severe risks to plastic film greenhouses. Excess heat, strong sunlight and stagnant air cause poor pollination, leaf scorch, weakened photosynthesis and dramatic yield drops. Farmers must adopt mixed cooling systems instead of one single method to secure crop output.

First, block solar heat from outside. Install 50–70% external shading nets, reflective aluminum thermal screens or greenhouse whitewash coating to cut incoming radiation, lowering indoor temperature by 3–7°C and stopping heat accumulation near crops.

Second, boost natural ventilation via roof and side roll-up vents paired with clean insect nets. The chimney airflow effect quickly exhausts hot air and draws in cool outdoor air, delivering a 3–6°C cooling effect with low operating costs.

Third, deploy evaporative cooling ideal for dry hot regions. High-pressure foggers, roof sprayers and pad-fan units use vaporization to absorb heat without soaking plant leaves. Large commercial greenhouses rely on pad & fan systems for steady cooling of 4–10°C.

 

 

Fourth, reinforce crop heat resistance. Water crops via precision drip irrigation at dawn or dusk to keep root soil moist, and apply salicylic or fulvic acid biostimulants. Vigorous plants better withstand heat stress and retain stable production.

Fifth, adopt centralized intelligent climate controllers. The auto system synchronizes ventilation, shading, fogging, pad-fan gear and temperature-humidity sensors, stabilizing microclimate while cutting water and power waste.
